How to set durations in hours instead of days

Can anyone tell me if I can set my project to use hours instead of days? I've a situation where I had allowed one day for a task which I then completed in only half a day. I can't set the start date for the following dependent task to the same day because it still shows the completed task as finishing at 1700 taking the whole day. I can't find anywhere to set this as an option.

Open Task, General Tab enter time
For example in the Gantt view, open the task, on general tab enter duration as 4 hrs, or .5 (half day).
Use work column
The display is in days for duration. We are looking to give an hours option in the future instead of .5 etc. you can see hours if you insert the work column
