MSI Shortcut Table

Hi all,

looking to deploy the MSI to some staff as part of an initiative to improve our project planning but I am having an issue with the way the installer provides this to the user. We are using a management solution to push out the MSI but I think Group Policy would likely have the same issue.

The installer seems to only install for the user who is running the MSI, with a single shortcut in the start menu or Windows 8 equivalent. I was hoping to get a shortcut into C:UsersPublicDesktop but following guides online to modify the MSI Directory and Shortcut tables do not seem to be working. I am now getting a desktop shortcut for the user that runs it, but not in the Public desktop, despite my MSI changes being for the Public desktop, and no desktop shortcut for any user when the management solution deploys using a local system account.

Are there any suggestions or tips on how to achieve this through the MSI? I could of course push out a shortcut afterwards via a separate script but this would require validation to ensure the path was correct and because of our setup would not run as soon as the installer had finished.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be given to resolve this issue. We have pushed back on other products because they cannot be mass-installed and I am hoping this one little niggle will allow me to proceed to deploy this to many people.

Kind regards,

-- Danny

I see your point... it does only install for the user.  We can do a custom installation for you or use the upcoming cloud version... let me know and we can give a quote for the installation customization
