Question about interaction between material resources and task duration

I'm having trouble understanding the way assigning resources impact on durations of tasks. For example, let's say I have already created a calendar with non default working time of 9.5 hours per day: 7.30am-12pm and 1pm-6pm. I have also entered the duration option that 9.5 hours = 1 day.
I create a task which by default has 9.5 hours entered in the work column and 1 day entered in the duration column. The start time is 7.30am and finish time is 6pm, which is what I would expect.
Then I create a materials resouce (bag of cement). If I assign that resource to the task I created previously, the value in the work column changes to zero and the finish time changes to 9.30am the following day.
Why does this happen?
Bill.

Strange and you may have found a bug... should not happen
Hi Bill,
Thank you very much. I unfortunately think you found a bug. We need to look at that as you should certainly not be seeing that result. It must be something with material resource designation and the custom calendar. We are heads down right now finally trying to get the cloud version out so it will not be a quick fix. I will have this elevated for fixing once the team has time to look into..
Thanks!
Trying to understand how resources relate to duration
I'm having similar issues. I'm trying to understand the relationship between Duration, Work, Assigned Resources & Percentages, and Start/Finish dates. Is there any documentation that explains this?
My specific problem is that I am trying to record a task that requires 1 hour of work, but lasts several days because it is not a priority or because it was actually delayed for a reason. When I try to do this, the Finish Date changes, and if I am able to put it back to the actual finish date, something else changes.
Is there some setting that I can specify that will allow me to manually calculate everything (i.e. remove constraints)?
Material resource vs task duration. Cost by use.
I am having problems with material resource assignment and a distortion in the task duration.
For example, I have created some tasks that only need material assignment, in the resource sheet I create the material resource and assigned a cost by use.
For example:
Task: to import BSQ fan.
Duration: 7 days.
In the resource sheet: BSQ, type Material, Cost by use $2000
When I assigned the resource to the task, I realized that in sometimes the duration change, example from 7 to 8 days, in some other cases it keeps the same duration for the task but the total project duration change and in some other cases where the duration change it moves the Gantt bar several days beyond the extra duration assigned without reason.
I appreciate any recommendation on this, kind regards.

Can you send the project .pod ?
Thank you for the note.... our team was recently testing cost accrual algorithms such as 'accrue' the cost at the start of the task, end of task or pro rated over the duration of the task. I could not duplicate your situation. Can you send the .pod file to [email protected] and we can test.
Help with resource allocation
My project calendar is set for an 8-hour workday. The Activity Task has a duration of 2 days, with a budgeted labor unit set at 48 hours.
How do I manipulate my data to reflect 48 hours allocated for this task vs. 16 hours (8x2=16 hrs.)? Where do I add the information?
Fixed Duration task and Assignments at 400%
In the task detail Click on the Advanced tab..... make the Task Type to be Fixed Duration and then when assigning the resource it will be the standard at 100% of 16 hours for the two days.... so you change the Assignment to 400% units and the duration will stay 2 days but the work with be 64 hours. (keep in mind if you don't change to fixed duration the duration will adjust )
