How to lock the duration of tasks

Hi everybody.

In my project, I have only one task (TASK1), and I think it will last for 10 days.

I assigned three resources to TASK1: Supervisor, Employee and a Diver.

  • Manager works only 2 hours a day in my project (he is the project supervisor and he splits his time in more other projects).
  • Employee is a full-time employee in TASK1, and he works 8 hours a day.
  • Diver is a employee that works 4 hours a day at the bottom of the sea (you know, divers have their inmersion time limited; once they have done their hours, they have to rest).

As I said, I think the TASK1 will last for 10 days because the full-time employee needs 80 hours to complete the work.

The other two resources, when are working, they are simultaneous to the full-time employee, i.e., they do not replace the full-time employee, they work together at the same time, but two of them go back home or other places home sooner.

So here come my questions (I have red the documentation and some other posts, and after playing a bit, I can not see it clear yet, sorry):

1) Let's suppose I want the task to REMAIN lasting for 10 days no matter the quantity of resources I assign to it. But I assigned the Manager (who works 2 hours a day) and only the manager, and the duration of the task changed from 10 days to 2,5 days... I want the task to last for 10 days, how could I lock this duration?. If I change the task duration again to 10 days, I find that the Manager has suddenly 80 hours assigned instead of 20 (he only works two hours a day!). What am I doing wrong?.

2) I changed the calendar of the Manager, and I declared he would work for 2 hours a day, 10 hours a week, 20 days a month. When I was back to the Gantt, the duration of the activity was suddenly from 10 to 40 days (80 hours / 2 hours/day = 40 days). I declared a 2hours/day calendar for the Manager and everything was alright again... BUT:

3) I introduced a new resource, the full-time employee, and I DID NOT assigned him to the TASK1. I declared a 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week and 20 days/week for him, and when I went back to the Ganntt, the duration of the task had changed again... but I do still want the task to keep its 10 days duration. What am I doing wrong?...

I think there is a big mess of calendars and tasks in my mind, and the program is not clear about this point, about the relations between task duration and hours of resources... Can you enlight me a little please?, thank you very much in advance.

Hello there.... you ask very good questions.  You can have a fixed duration on your tasks.  The default is an effort driven duration which is why you can see the change in the duration based upon your adding resources.  However, if you click on the Activity dialog box and select the Advanced tab.   You can deselect the Effort Driven radio button and also

* Activity Detail view

* Select Advanced tab

* Click on Type (this is selecting the task type)

* Select "Fixed Duration"

This will solve your problem.  You have the options of Fixed Duration, Fixed Units and Fixed Work.

Thank you Marco. Perhaps anybody would have interest on why I wanted to keep the tasks duration locked: I want to prioritize the durations. Of course, the logical thing would be to fill the pool of task duration with resolurces' hours. But in my case, I wanted to keep the durations and use the resources dedication ONLY for cost estimation purposes. For instance, I could deliver just the Ganntt diagram to my customer (with the dates I want) and provide a cost estimation for the project. This cost could be adjusted by some "fine-tunning" on resources hours without changing tasks durations. That is.

Have a nice weekend. I'm going to try your suggestions just now, I thank you very much. And my congrats for your great project management  tool.

That is great, glad to assist.... we need to keep documenting ProjectLibre so it is available.  I am hoping the community kicks in and finishes the wiki documentation.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Pedro,

If you do not want the duration of tasks is modified to assign or remove resources on activities, a good option would be to use the option Fixed Duration. Have you worked with her? If not, double click on the task - Advanced - Type - Fixed Duration. Hope this helps.
