Limited Resources and Task Completion Calc

Hi, I am new to ProjectLibre. I am wondering how to solve the following problem of a resource having a limited input on a project per day and the resultant period over which that task would be completed.

Example

Resource1 works 1 hours on a project per day.

Task duration = 8 hours.

Therefore, Task completion time should be 8 working days. If it started 30.10.13 then it would be completed 08.11.13 (8 working days later).

How do I implement this?

I had been trying to set the Resource Availability using "Max. Units" and setting it to 6% to give an approximate restricted use.

However, when setting "Task Information" and the "Work:" at 8 hours, I expected the dialog to automatically show the Duration to be 8 days based on the assigned Resource.

You can set the Duration manually for 8 days and the Work at 8 hours. Is that the correct way of managing things?

I wonder if it should be somehow automatic depending on the Resource's contribution to a project on a daily basis.

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks for contributions in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Good news, I just tested my idea and it worked as it should have....  You can create a task and give it a 1 day duration.  You can create a calendar that works 1 hour a day and 5 days a week... You can then assign the resource to the task and because the default is effort driven task it will show as 8 days on the Gantt chart.  You can de-select Effort driven task and it will still show as a single day.... lot of flexibility on managing your project.  That should help and welcome to the ProjectLibre community!

Hi Marc,

Many thanks for your reply. I did try the suggestion.

  1. I created a new calendar with just 1 hour per day.
  2. I created a Resource and assigned the new calendar under General tab | Base Calendar
  3. I created a task that had a time period of 1 day.
  4. I edited the task and assigned the new Resource.
  5. Under the Advanced tab for the new task, the Type = Fixed Units, Effort Driven = Checked.

RESULT: Gantt chart shows Task = 1 day. Not what I expected. The Resource only works 1 hour per day, therefore, the Gantt should show 5 days.

NOTE: By default, the Task Calendar is BLANK. If I then select my new calendar (with the 1 hours per day), ONLY THEN does the Gantt chart reflect a longer period i.e. 5 days.

That doesn't seem correct to me as the whole idea of setting up a Resource and an assigned calendar is that whenever you use that Resource, tasks are going to take longer than normal Resources.

I will use a workaround of constantly clicking the Task Advanced Tab and selecting a specific calendar in the meantime.

Can you confirm that this is a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.
